Also me: “you mean to tell me I could spend half my time in a city (well, Prince Albert, most likely) , and the other half in a northern remote fly-in community that considers winter as starting in September and ending in June? For one week in town and one week up north? Sign me up!”
We’ll see if I’m eligible for it in the next year. I’m sure all my supervisors are wondering what my career plan is, because I have no idea.

This is why you move to Fort McMurray. All the remote at a high price .

No way would I move to Fort Mac.

FIFO is big business in Oz...the only difference is nowhere near as much snow.
I've also noticed that DIDO is becoming a thing around here...

There's another community that's drive in - drive out. But this one sounds more fun.

As someone who has spent a significant amount of his working career moving every week between cities and small remote towns, including a lot above the Arctic Circle, I can safely declare you mentally unstable ;).
I don’t know you of course , I myself enjoy nature and lovely views, but the traveling and monotonous life in the remote place will probably take its toll like it did with me.

I have to pass a psych test first, so I might be certifiably unstable!
Thing is, my line of work requires a lot of moving. I’m done here in a year or two, and by doing some time up north, it means I can be considered eligible for other spots not in Saskatchewan. So two years of that so I could maybe move back to Ontario, out east, out west, wherever? I’m game.
How did you find the effects of it on your sleep?

Whenever I go somewhere remote, I hate the fact that I can’t get decent internet (and “decent” is relative because I get gigabit at home in the city) but living in the city I hate that I’m surrounded by so many people and so many of them are shit.

McMurray is a piece of shit.

Maybe it's like catch 22. Wanting to work up North is failing the first question on the mental health test

You can make good bank in camp.. as long as the camp costs are decent. And you don’t go nuts when you are off in the city.
Used to work fly- ins out of Fort Nelson.

That is exactly my problem. My regular bartenders think I’m the nicest guy in the world just because I treat them like they’re people and a large chunk of their customers really don’t (and that’s before they even get drunk) . I hate living in a place where I’m never the biggest asshole, and I’m a pretty serious asshole .
But if I moved away from the city I’d either have to drive all the way in just to get a paycheck or I’d need solid internet with good bandwidth and reasonable latency . Even then, I might have to change to a line of work that I would find truly soul-crushing, and spending 8 hours a day being miserable is not something I’m willing to do anymore.

I mean, that does sound like the best of both worlds.
